The Shepherd and His Staff(a short story from the letters of אל)He stood on the ridge at dawn, staff in hand.
אל – just the ox and the staff, nothing more.
The staff pointed east, and every ox, every sheep, every wandering heart knew: this is the way.He lifted His voice.
אלה – the breath came out, a promise and a warning.
“Walk with Me and live; turn aside and fall.”
The sheep trembled, but they stayed. He taught the young oxen to take the yoke.
אלף – the staff touched their necks, gentle, steady, thousand upon thousand learning the path. One lamb strayed to the cliff’s edge.
אלד – its hooves slipped, life dangling.
The Shepherd’s heart broke; a cry rose: “Woe is Me if I lose even one.”He ran, staff swinging like a sickle.
אלז – the staff reaped the lamb back into His arms, and the hills rang with rejoicing.A wall rose between Him and the flock.
אלח – the staff struck stone.
He bowed low, humbled, yet the sheep heard His voice through the wall and pressed close.Wolves came, twisting the path.
אלט – the staff itself seemed crooked for a moment, but He straightened it with His own hand.He snatched the weakest from the jaws.
אלק – the staff became a sun-bow, enclosing, consuming every threat. He led them to green pasture and turned aside to rest.
אלץ – the staff leaned against a rock; the sheep lay down in peace. The jackals circled, teeth flashing.
אלש – the staff flashed faster; devourer became devoured.Night fell.
אלת – He set His mark, His seal, over every sheep.
No one could touch them. Then He laid the staff across the gate, became the door Himself, and whispered:“I am the Good Shepherd.
The staff you saw moving was My own arm.
Every pointing, every promise, every snatching, every sealing,
was Me.”And the sheep slept in perfect peace,
because the אל had become their rest.Word-for-Word Breakdown (אב removed)
Pure אל from beginning to end.
